FINDER: can't make NEW FOLDER

Bizarre -

I keep a bunch of folders in my sidebar that point to folders inside  
my Documents folders residing on an external drive.

The Finder, for some reason (today), is not letting me create a New  
Folder.  In fact, the menu item is GRAYED out.

The drive is mounted.  I can navigate it. I can open files on it.   
I've been writing files to the drive on a daily basis for over a month.

I can create a new folder on my Desktop, no problem.

I can't take that folder and drop it into the subfolder on the  
external drive.

Ah .. RELAUNCH of Finder did the trick.
