While I have no inside knowledge . . . I have seen that TM on AE was  
disabled late in the Leopard beta process due to some issues. Given  
that the new device is essentially an AE with a drive in it . . . I  
don't see any technical reason Apple can't upgrade the firmware in the  
AE base stations. I would guess this also means that the issues have  
been resolved.

Now whether they will actually update the firmware is another  
question . . . but based on what it looks like there don't appear to  
be any major technical reasons they can't do so.
