TextEdit does NOT support background color on text though, it only  
supports background color on the entire document.  As I recall, these  
are two different things in rtf.

You can always open the rtf in BBEdit<1>, find the offending  
background, and remove it.

<1> TextWrangler, nvi, vim, emacs, joe, pico, nana, &c &c.
