Sure ?

On the HDD front: the newly announced Toshibas are SATA rather than  
PATA. Is this the end of PATA development in 1.8 inch drives ?

I don't know enough about Flash/NAND/SS to know whether some  
modification to the drive type would render newer larger disks  
incompatible with the current MBA ?

It seems certain that bigger, better (and cheaper per GB) disks will  
come and that they will make their way into MBAs fairly quickly, I'm  
not so sure that retrofittable solutions for the current gen MBAs are  
probable, but I'd be happy to be assured that they are.
