Oops, forgot to mention, it is also the format Handbrake "recommends"  
for ripping films.

Interesting, I first came across an mkv file on the weekend.    
Couldn't open in Quicktime but VLC handled it fine.

Why do you think it sucks?

A quick look on the Web, some people think it's quite good, for some  
seemingly sensible reasons.
