have you try the various rsync approaches? RsyncX, for example,
has features to build shell scripts for incremental backups (i
was skeptical of this at first, as a search of this list's
archives will show)
<http://archive.macosxlabs.org/rsyncx/rsyncx.html>
and rsync-backup is a config-file based shell-only tool i used
for a while to regularly sync (not backup) three machines at work
<http://code.google.com/p/rsync-backup/>
at home, though, i mostly use Apple Backup, courtesy of .mac, to
do a minimal backup to my iDisk plus a user-folder backup to my
home server, plus the beta of Mac Mozy (which has not been
trouble free) for a remote backup; i also use Carbon Copy Cloner
to make occasionally bootable clones and on one machine have used
CCC3's scheduling tool to do incrementals to a local disk (which
has worked okay, but is difficult to monitor and sometimes pops
up a "volume not found" message); i am running 10.4.10 by the way
overall, without any one best backup choice, my strategy is to
use multiple tools, backing up the most critical files the most
redundantly
