mail in Leopard has smart mailboxes that let you search for dates.

Spotlight in Leopard will let you search for a string as you describe  
( " 4 february" ) and then refine the results to just mail messages.

MailSteward [1] (standalone app) creates an sql database of all your  
mail that is fully searchable in the way you describe

not a button per se, but a keystroke for a rule to move to folder
