Encoding display in Terminal.app

I use Terminal.app to read USENET groups using slrn. Everything
mostly works, except for the display of accented character.

In a recent post, I saw "A clich?", but when replying to the post
(which passes the message to BBEdit as the editor) I properly see "A
cliché" (if the message is encoded in ISO-Latin-1).

My character encoding for the window in Terminal is UTF-8 and iso-
latin-1 (only those two are enabled), but even if the message in the
newsgroup is UTF-8, I do not see the accented characters.

I've tried many settings in Terminal.app and cannot get the display of
the characters correct, but they do appear correctly on ISO-Latin-1
posts once I get them into BBEdit.

I'm pretty sure the current stable version of slrn doesn't understand
UTF-8, so I am not surprised at that not working correctly.
