Leopard mail "Get Mail" button

I suspect the activity pane only shows activity after a certain time  
limit, the help screens kind of imply that:


“Some actions might seem to take a long time, such as retrieving a  
message with a large attachment. You can view Mail activity to monitor  
progress.

Here are ways to view Mail activity:
■ To monitor Mail activity for incoming and outgoing messages, click  
the Mail Activity icon (looks like an up arrow) at the bottom of the  
sidebar to use the Mail Activity pane in the sidebar.

■ To monitor all Mail activity, such as updating RSS feeds, choose  
Window > Activity to open the Activity window.
To stop an action, click the Stop icon in the Activity window. It may  
take a few minutes for Mail to cancel an action that is in progress.”



I've only ever seen incoming for lots of messages and usually it's  
only outgoing messages that show briefly in the activity pane.
