Does anybody know of a way of telling Apple Mail to split the thread  
when this happens?

It doesn't happen very often, and I'm sure most of the time it's by  
accident(*), but t would make it a lot less confusing/annoying if you  
could just tell Mail "This is the start of a new thread".

(*) ... although some of my co-workers seem to take pleasure in doing  
it.
