(OS 10.4, Mail 2.1.1) References: Message-ID: Hi, I just noticed an odd behavior that *I* at least consider a bug in mail. I wrote a message and sent it to X, and CC'd it to address Y. X and Y are both Yahoo mailing lists. What I get back when I check my folder from mail from X is *two* copies of the same message, both the same, but with different Reply-To fields (one of X and one to Y). It seems to me that Mail should send out one message to X with reply-to of X , the other to Y with a reply-to of Y. Either that or the RFC needs to change to allow multiple Reply-To, but that has great potential to create havoc - with postings really meant for only one list going to the other. I'm subscribed to both, so I can just check both (except I'm about 500 messages behind on one of them..) Or it could be a preference (time to write my own email client - I need one too to just keep track better of all sorts of lists - replies to threads I initiate and replies to threads I've participated in would be VERY nice and I don't see a way to do it with Rules/SmartFolders except for running an Applescript on everything (or post-processing the mail with a Perl/etc script and then rebuilding the Mail database) Is this a bug/feature/personal-annoyance, or am I doing something wrong (or should I just not cross-post to lists) Jim From jswitte at bloomington.in.us Wed Apr 2 15:41:04 2008 From: jswitte at bloomington.in.us (Jim Witte) Date: Wed Apr 2 15:41:20 2008 Subject: Anybody else have 'hoards of shared printers' in the list? References: Message-ID: I'm using (Intel) OSX 10.4.10, sharing a printer (Brother DCP-7020) from a (PPC) 10.4.11 machine. I will often see at least two, sometimes 7 or 8 printers listed in the "Shared Printers" submenu - all the same, but only one of them seems to activate the Print button. What are all the other "ghosts" doing there? On the host machine, all the printers showed up as well in Printer Setup. This problem persisted even after I removed all the 'ghosts' (and the one working queue as well) from the host machine, and then re- added the printer - I gave it a name different from the default driver name. Now on the "slave" mac I have two printers listed under that name, and before I when I had the whole slew of printers, they all had the default driver name. Anybody else have this problem? Is this a known bug (and is it fixed in Leopard)? Jim From jswitte at bloomington.in.us Wed Apr 2 20:46:59 2008 From: jswitte at bloomington.in.us (Jim Witte) Date: Wed Apr 2 20:47:15 2008 Subject: Tiger Mail (2.1.1) suddenly making (most) *downloaded* IMAP mail "has not been download from the server.." Message-ID: Hi, Strange problem that just surface on Intel Tiger 10.4.10, and Mail 2.1.1. I have a my IMAP set up with a LOT of filters for different local folders, to download messages and store them locally, and then delete them off the server (I forget where the option to "delete when moved" is right now, but..). Anyway, I opened up a folder and clicked on a message and it said, "this message has not been downloaded from the server.." The connection was "online" (as far as mail was concerned), and I checked with Webmail and sure enough, there was nothing there (these messages had been downloaded days ago. Strangely, this ONLY happened with "single messages" - ones that were in threads were preserved fine. (I didn't try turning threading off to see what happened. I suspect I would have seen the same thing) In one person's email folder (with no threading of messages), ALL the messages were gone (with the possibly exception of 'sent' messages I had written and put in there). But the headers were still there. I rebuilt the folder, and now the headers disappeared too! I panicked a bit here - I have a recent backup, but it's still about 4 days old ("hello Time Machine.." Although on a laptop the time capsule or more-expensive-per-gigabyte portable HD [which are small] is about it). So I quit mail look in the Finder at ~/Library/Mail/ ASD/* Binstock.mbox (that should contain all the mail, and sure enough, all the .emlx files are there..) So I take mail "offline", quit it and reopen it. Everything comes back, without any rebuilding at all. Mind you, I have probably at least 10,000 messages in my hierarchy ("reminds me of IU webmail program, Hoard - "we know where mail comes from, but where does it *go*?"). I have been doing a LOT of spotlight searching in the Mail app itself, which may be adding to the databases and corrupting them perhaps) Should I rebuild any particular SQLite databases that Mail uses (I know the 'vacuum subjects' command will speed up Mail quite a bit, and possibly clear out broken pieces of the DB? Or just delete the databases and let Mail rebuild them on it's own? Or just start backing up mail every day.. (and get Leopard and a Time Capsule - can you hack another Mac's external drive into working like a Time Capsule?) Or get Entourage or something more appropriate for the kinds of really advanced filtering I'd like to be able to do (by person, storing outgoing message to different people in specific folders, being alerted or able to color messages in threads that 1) I started 2) I posted to. Set colors of messages IN MAIL AND SET SPOTLIGHT COMMETNTS!! (Why the HECK can't I do that now? It's just an elmx file and in the finder you can set SL comments on any file - so why not directly from Mail?) Or for that matter change subject lines, rethread separate message threads that get broken or forked.. Do rule-based processing on mail based on a text file of subjects (coloring particular subject lines, etc). Or write my own email client (but then I lose SL - or at least Mail's presumably optimized SL implementation - and anyway I don't do Cocoa, much less SL or CoreData or SQLite programming..) Or just learn to love some semi-graphical Emacs where I can write my own Elisp macros to do whatever I want (I would LOVE the ability to hook onto any functionality of a program without rooting around for object names and message calls, and using APE to do it.. The ability to attach Applescript Studio script to Apple apps would be nice.. And impossible I think) Jim From johnmusbach1 at gmail.com Wed Apr 2 21:34:01 2008 From: johnmusbach1 at gmail.com (John Musbach) Date: Wed Apr 2 21:34:04 2008 Subject: Anybody else have 'hoards of shared printers' in the list? Each mailing list independently gets a copy of the e-mail, and each reflects it to the entire membership with Reply- To set to itself. I don't see how any other result is possible even if you wanted one. > I'm using (Intel) OSX 10.4.10, sharing a printer (Brother > DCP-7020) from a (PPC) 10.4.11 machine. In my case, two machines on the network both had a printer with the exact same name ("Epson {model- number}") and one of them decided to enable printer sharing on his printer. The list of identical printers grew as we watched! We solved it by renaming the printers. I've also seen similar results when one machine decided to enable printer sharing on a networked printer: the other Macs went bats. The key here is to make sure that no machine has a defined printer with the same name as a printer another Mac is sharing (even if it's the selfsame device). -- Macs R We -- Personal Macintosh Service and Support in the Wickenburg and far Northwest Valley Areas. http://macsrwe.com From robertlaferla at comcast.net Fri Apr 4 06:37:56 2008 From: robertlaferla at comcast.net (robertlaferla@comcast.net) Date: Fri Apr 4 06:38:00 2008 Subject: Automator action to export office documents to PDF? It should be looking at all the meta data for messages and building its own smart- mailboxes out of that. Like it sees a much of messages from this mailing list, so it makes a folder for the group all on its own. It notices that when you get emails from Mom@yourdomain.tld (or blumbergh@inintech.tld ) you respond very quickly, so it warns you when messages from Mom/ Bill come in so you can deal with them right away. -- Oh and I could be a genius if I just put my mind to it And I, I could do anything if only I could get 'round to it. With a bit of TLC for the various tags, and liberal use of smart playlists, you can do pretty well in iTunes. Here are some links to articles explaining ways to do this. Taming iTunes for Classical Music http://oakroadsystems.com/genl/itunes.htm Tagging Classical Music http://www.macworld.com/article/43791/2005/03/tagclass.html Classical Music on the iPod and iTunes http://www.macworld.com/article/43560/2005/03/classicalipod.html And there are, of course, many more links - and opinions - out there. As you've already said, the blame lies with CDDB and the record companies being inconsistent in how they classify their recordings. So it's not really fair to blame iTunes: you'd be hard put to find any software that will turn poor-quality input into a perfect user experience. For my own collection I've resorted to editing the metadata to set the composer as the 'Artist' and the opus as the 'Album'. There's a little-publicised feature in iTunes that helps with this: you can select a bunch of tracks and then open a Get Info window that allows you to make global changes. This also helps where a work spans multiple CDs and the vendor hasn't set the disc numbers properly. Tony M. It provides ad filtering by way of a proxy HTTP server. I thought I had problems with this before (I know it makes things a bit more complex) but I will try it out again. It should give ad filtering in any browser and any application that uses WebKit (e.g. including NetNewsWire). Apparently set-up is a bit more difficult on Leopard, see here: Cheers, Ashley. Me too, exactly. But I hate the dark, low contrast tabs and bookmark bar. Legibility is more important than 'cool'. It may be fixable with a css file if necessary. For the past two years, I occasionally receive emails sent to 80+ names most located in the UK about upcoming events for Urban Initiatives. These are not spam, but somehow I am mistakenly included in the distribution list. I get pdfs of meeting announcements, etc. The reason I ask here is that there a number of you in the UK who may have written to me in the past, thus I would be in your address books, and perhaps I was inadvertently included in a distribution list you created. Other than folks on this list, I do not regularly, if ever, communicate with anyone in the UK. The messages include a disclaimer saying they're for the intended recipients, and if you receive it mistakenly, to contact the sender. I have, and have even received messages back from them saying they didn't understand what I was talking about. I think you will find that the SAS (serially attached SCSI) drives will generally be smaller, faster, server grade, and more expensive whereas the SATA drives will be larger, slower, and have non-server grade options making them less expensive. Unless you are running an enterprise system or have really high-end video demands then I would suggest a RAID of SATA drives would be fine (RAID does stand for inexpensive drives, after all) and save you quite bit of money. Of course, you'd want to do the calculations to see that the RAID can handle your bandwidth requirements etc. Cheers, Ashley. -- Ashley Aitken Perth, Western Australia mrhatken at mac dot com Skype Name: MrHatken (GMT + 8 Hours!) Without looking at the data rate specs for each drive, and not knowing the characteristics of Apple's RAID controller, I'd suspect that SATA drives would be better for video capture. That said, striped disks (RAID 0) are faster than single disks. Mirrored disks (RAID 1) provide redundancy, but no performance improvement. RAID 5 stripes across all disks with distributed parity, but often sucks on writes because of parity calculations. RAID 0+1 is optimal for performance+redundancy, but expensive in dedicated disks due to mirroring. -- Andrew Laurence atlauren@uci.edu From jeff at jeffweinberger.com Thu Apr 10 19:39:48 2008 From: jeff at jeffweinberger.com (Jeff Weinberger) Date: Thu Apr 10 19:40:08 2008 Subject: System font installation? Seagate and Hitachi both make high MTBF 24x7 rated "data center" SATA drives with 5 year warranties. They are generally 10% (or thereabouts) more expensive than their desktop brethren. I would look at that class of drive. Hitachi Ultrastar or the Seagate ones. I don't play with that sort of video though.
