upgrading to Logic Studio

Sometimes Apple gets these...employees...

This doesn't sound like a genius bar problem, it sounds like an 
_escalated_ Apple store phone support issue. I can't believe they 
don't run into this problem quite a bit. Does it say on the box that 
it doesn't upgrade academic versions of Logic Studio?

If that doesn't work, I'd be tempted to cart the whole thing to a 
nearby apple store, lay it all out, and then point out to the genius 
bar what the problem is. Loudly. When the store is busy.
