It creates a top level folder:  Backups.backupdb

and in that folder, are subfolders named after any computers backing  
up to that drive

In each computer-folder, there are subfolders (timestamped backups)  
containing subfolders for Apps, Users etc

you can navigate the folders and look at the contents quite easily
