Time Machine BEFORE installing Leopard

I know Shawn mentioned you could do a TM backup BEFORE installing
Leopard.
I installed L on two machines at home and I don't recall seeing that
option.
I mentioned it to my BIL who'd installed it on 3 machines and he'd not
see it either.
Also mentioned it to another friend who'd installed L on one machine,
and he'd not seen the option.
How is it that we're missing it? is it not obvious? or are we just
not reading the install wizard options?
