preparing for Time Machine

Unfortunately, I think this means you can backup volume A to volume B  
and also backup volume A to volume C (so you can rotate one off-site  
etc.)

Again, due to sizeof(Volume) <= sizeof(disk) and the way Time Machine  
works I think a backup will not be able to span multiple drives, i.e.  
generally volume being backed up needs to be << backup volume.

So if you have filled up that 500GB drive and you touch quite a few  
MBs each day, Time Machine isn't going to be very helpful.

At least, not until ZFS comes along.
