Any Time Machine issues I should be aware of?

If the drive is formatted UFS then this is likely normal behavior,
sleeping causes the drive to unexpectedly unmount (or the UFS
filesystem thinks this anyways) and when you resume out of sleep the
drive will not remount because the UFS drive was improperly removed
and requires a manual fsck. Checking the disk with Disk Utility is the
gui equivalent of doing a manual fsck so after the check you are then
able to remount the drive. If you are indeed using UFS on the drive
you may want to consider reporting this to Apple at
http://bugreport.apple.com as this could be a bug with the way they
handle the UFS filesystem during sleep.
