Finder bugs

I've updated to 10.5.1 and the Finder is driving me nuts.

I like to keep a few often-accessed folders in Places.
Not sure what causes it, but they just disappear.

Most of these folders are subfolders in my Documents folder.
My Documents folder lives on an external drive.

I was thinking it might be that the drive has gone to sleep and the  
Finder loses seeing the contents even though the drive still shows as  
mounted.

Suggestions?

I don't recall having these issues under Tiger.
