You are right. It just so happens that all of the subscription changes  
I wanted to make were all to global folders and I didn't notice that  
non-global changes were not possible. Of course, this does still  
enable a potential solution, if  you can live with the folders you  
want to unsub as global for the domain. Will depend on contents and  
who else has accounts in your domain obviously.
