'double' message with gmail IMAP?

Yes, but if this was handled properly, when I read a message in  
'Inbox' it would immediately be read in the label folders.  This is  
not the case, Mail.app has TWO COPIES of the message.

Right, but the functional upshot of all this is that I see every  
message at least twice when reading mail, except for those messages  
that are tagged only as 'Inbox'.

I don't know who's 'fault' it is, but I suspect it is a combination of  
Apple's rather lax support for IMAP and gmail's rather odd IMAP.
