On the older models, the USB port could only be used for a printer.  
Disks could be connected via ethernet (e.g. a NAS disk). The newest  
model has the facility to add disks to the LAN via USB.

Apple did make it very clear when the new model came out that it had  
the *new* airdisk feature.
