Consider troubleshooting on the phone to AppleCare before you speak  
for "many people".

You might be able to hack it (Got your $home sorted?) but that's WAY  
beyond the ability of the average punter.

Apple has ostensibly produced two Macs without opticals - AppleTV and  
iPhone. But they both require host computers to a greater or lesser  
degree.
