Stephen,

Just out of curiosity I checked the Apple Store and found the following:

A 24" iMac with:

2.33ghz core 2 duo
3gb ram
750gb hd
NVIDIA 7600 GT 256mb ram
3 years AppleCare

is $3692

A MacPro with a similar setting (the closest I could get):
2x 2.66ghz dual core Xeon
4gb ram
750gb hd
NVIDIA 7300 GT 256mb ram
3 years AppleCare

is $3795

The $103 difference is:
   better CPU for the MP
   more RAM for the MP
but
   24" for the iMac

(the 30" display is $1800 whatever the machine configuration is of
course)

So for a $103 difference you can have either an extra monitor or a
faster machine, considering your work, having the maxed-out iMac+ a
30" display may not be an overkill.
