Firefox Weirdness

Could  be font cache  corruption - the font  cache  will  always be  
checked  first by apps  that use it,  and  different apps seem to  
call  on the cache differently.

Try this:  Quit all apps, delete the folder /Library/Caches/ 
com.apple.ATS , restart.

I've seen this trick fix myriad similar  problems.
