I had the exact same problem, and came up with the exact same  
workaround, although I don't log out.
The problem was logged with Apple around two years ago, and IIRC was  
tagged as duplicate. I've never bothered risking the problem to see  
if a recent system update may have fixed it, or if the Intel laptops  
are free of the problem... especially since my original problem  
occurred about 1 in 3 sleeps.
