I have a MacBook that I connect to an external monitor at work.
I used to have a major problem getting it to wake up at home in
the evening after putting it to sleep at work. My current
procedure for packing it up at the end of the day:
1. Get it running with both external and built-in monitors if it
wasn't already.
2. Disconnect the external monitor and allow the MacBook to make
the built-in the only monitor.
3. Log out.
4. Close the lid and put the computer to sleep.
Since I've started using this procedure, I haven't had a problem
waking up. Step 3 is the critical one. If I perform the same
procedure but omit logging out, the computer will more than
likely refuse to wake up, requiring a hard reboot.
