Viewing WMV video using VLC plug-in for Firefox/Safari?

I am trying to get Firefox 2.x and also Safari to play WMV files in  
the browser.  I downloaded and installed the VLC web browser plug-in  
but I still get this error:

The page “http://www.host.com/somewebpage.html” has content of MIME  
type “video/x-ms-wmv”. Because you don’t have a plug-in installed for  
this MIME type, this content can’t be displayed.

How do I get this to work properly?
