yes, you can, but in this case Acrobat Pro 8's preflight says 
that there are no compatibility issues with PDF 1.3, and that 
there are no PDF syntax issues; there may be things that Acrobat 
doesn't check adequately, but this increases the likelihood that 
it's an issue with Mac OS X

i can do that, and it's a good suggestion; hopefully doing it 
once will be enough, because i don't have the patience to do it 
for every PDF that chokes Preview; PDF support has been lagging 
for years, so i don't expect my bug report to have much effect
