Startup issues

As joar says, if the CD won't boot, it's probably something else.

One (potentially obvious) thing to try is to remove all third-party/ 
non-essential devices. All third-party drives, mice, keyboards, USB  
drives -- everything.

Plug in only the Apple-supplied keyboard and mouse, and try again.
