it appears that it does work, but you'll have to remove the hard 
drive from the Apple TV, mount it elsewhere and install Perian:

the link to the mod is broken, but the MacN article describes it 
pretty clearly; some of the article comments make it sound hard 
to do, but doesn't sound so to me; the self-updating feature of 
Apple TV may wipe out such mods, however
