The only real use of a partition under OS X is BootCamp.

It's much better and safer to make a bootable clone of your boot  
volume onto a separate disk, and cheapo USB2 external will save your  
butt much more often than a dedicated partition will.  Especially  
since you can keep it in a locked drawer off-site.

I spend $14 on a case and pulled a drive from a dead laptop.   
Installed 10.4.6 onto it without any extras and that's my emergency  
drive.
