While we would all love NS4 (well, I would) and its dock and shelf
and 'finder' and left-hand scroll bars I think we can all agree that
WE are not the target audience.
And I can just see neophytes trying to deal with that tabbed dock.
Egads, it would be kinder to just shoot them.
Seriously, I think the only thing that would ever work is a sort of
Safari-like 'tabbed dock' option in the preferences. and a advanced
pref panel that only appeared when the tabbed dock was enabled.
Now, if they allowed a separate dock for each 'space' in Spaces, that
might be even better.
Hmm, ok, that's it.
Let's say you have 4 Spaces
Space 1: Finder, iTunes
Space 2: Mail, ichat, IRC app, Photobooth
Space 3: BBEdit, Script Editor, Terminal
Space 4: Firefox, Safari, iWeb
Now, when you are on Space 2 the dock for that space only shows the
following items, plus any custom items you add FOR SPACE 2: Finder,
Trash, Mail, iChat, irc, Photobooth. Switch to space 3 and you have:
Finder, BBEdit, Script Editor, Terminal and any custom items you've
added to the dock FOR SPACE 3.
'Finder' always takes you back to space 1. And maybe in "Space 1"
all the running apps are shown, and clicking iWeb in that dock
switches you over to Space 4.
This avoids the neophyte issue since they won't be using Spaces and
it gives you a nearly limitless power in the dock/spaces to customize
as many Spaces as you want.
OK, I'm convinced. What am I missing?
