Safari : location field filling out URL

I've noticed the following (I believe since Safari 3, but maybe  
earlier versions?):

If I type highlight the location field so I can replace it with  
text .. and I type:  "apple" (w/o quotes)  in the location field, I  
get this:

Safari can’t open the page “http://apple/” because it can’t find the  
server “apple”.

if I try it a few times, it eventually resolves to www.apple.com

I don't recall having this issue with Safari 2 ..
