mail programs

I checked at the Apple store before writing here, to see if I had missed something obvious, or didn't have the current version of Mail.app. The 'geniuses' looked for a Next Message menu item and were surprised when they couldn't find it, and saw that space bar only works in a preview pane.

Apparently the separate message window is a canned TextEdit function, which cannot pass an unexpected input to the main program. That may be why the T'bird programmers wrote their own text windows, unfortunately badly.

Is there something weird about how Mail.app is programmed that makes this so difficult? (I've been trying to get it changed for years.) Or is it just a Dilbert problem?
