Eudora is officially dead. Part of it went Open Source and will be  
made into an add-on for Thunderbid.
The add-on is actually already available in pre-pre-pre alpha state  
and hasn't been updated in a little while.

The problem with that is that Thunderbird is a rather non-Mac like app  
that doesn't integrate well in the System. Not for me...

Mailsmith is pretty powerful for POP (still no IMAP)

Mail is not all as bad as you seem to depict it. It also supports some  
add-ons that are quite valuable (I really like MailTags). With the  
proper use of smart groups and Spotlight integration, it can be rather  
decent IMVHO.
