It would help to know much apple paid for CUPS, and what deals those
other folks were able to arrange. Were they able to negotiate from a
strong position? I don't know. I'm going to bet they at least all got
good salaries.
The buyer sometimes requires the key people from the small company to
stick around for a couple years while the buyer learns from and
adopts to the system. The salary that these key employees make during
that time is probably significant, but salary income usually isn't in
the same order of magnitude as the income that comes from selling the
company. (It might get there if someone stuck around for ten or
twenty years.)
