We gave up on inkjets long ago for this kind of reason. Either
they're drying up and you have to replace the cartridges, or you're
printing along and they're reporting empty before they really are, so
you have to replace the cartridges. I honestly think the inkjet
business is a racket. Not to mention fiddling with non-standard paper
sizes, jams, etc. And after all that you still don't get the
photographic quality you can get from a quality print house like
adorama.com.
A couple years ago we ditched our last inkjet and just share a single
b/w Brother laser in the house. When we want photo prints, we let the
pros do what they do best. At .15/print or whatever it is, it's well
worth it to not have an inkjet around to get pissed off at. If you
need immediate gratification, some services (like snapfish) will let
you upload images and have them available as prints at your local
Walgreens an hour later.
If it were my mother-in-law, I'd be replacing her printer with an
inexpensive b/w laser, which will go for years without needing a
toner replacement.
