Apple iPhone `Subsidized' by Cingular, Says Who?

Well, everybody assumed that was the case because:

A) this phone technology looks really expensive to make (although we  
will have to wait to see this for real when it finally ships). Just  
the screen and the miniaturization work, including lots of custom  
silicon (as pointed by Steve Jobs on stage), seems to indicate a  
higher than announced price, without subsidizing.

B) there are already other phones that are more expensive at list  
price — without contract — than the locked iPhone announced price  
(like the Nokia Sirocco, over a 1.000), so everyone assumed, given A,  
that the iPhone will have a similar price without contract.

C) on top of that, Amazon DE has announced the iPhone 8GB, without  
contract/locking, for 999:

Either Amazon DE is 1) jumping the gun, 2) posting a prank or 3)  
doing something for Apple Europe to test the waters regarding  
european pricing.

Surprisingly enough, it's working for now: at that price, at the time  
of that post, it was number one in electronic items sales in Amazon  
Germany.
