I agree.

However, maybe it won't be so bad.  Perhaps Apple will provide a  
range of apps (for geeks as well - since they're geeks too) and set  
up a certification process for other parties to make apps available  
through Apple.  So, perhaps we could see an ecosystem.  This may also  
ensure that apps play well within the environment.

That said, two things come to mind:  1) it would also probably cost a  
bit and would rule out a lot of little hacks, small apps, etc.  That  
may or may not be a good thing ;-), and 2) although when I first got  
my Palm I downloaded a whole lot of little apps, I must admit I never  
used any of them (well, one I bought I used for a while).

I really hope Java apps can fit into this "managed ecosystem" though.
