There was a "rumoured" application/tool under development within  
Apple that would enable you to use TDM without restarting.

The limitation was, I believe, that you could only do it for  
unmounted volumes, i.e. you could not "share" a volume already in use  
(which makes sense).

Even that limitation would have been fine for me - since I use  
multiple volumes - and would have saved a lot of restarts of my  
laptop to put the content volume into TDM.

Unfortunately, other more important things came along and this app  
was put on hold ...
