It only affects people talking to the same base station.  So if you  
make you "n" device  n-only it won't affect you.  You can use your  
previous b/g device on a separate channel to support your other items.

And as Matt said, it only affects it when you are transmitting  
multiple devices at the same time using the same base station.

That is how I understood it.  I have a g compatible device and a b  
device.  My Airport Exrteme (b/g) device is set up to allow both but  
I also have an Airport Express so the b device (old iBook) uses the  
Airport Express and the PB uses the g device the Extreme unless the  
Express is not available as I also take it traveling with me.
