FWIW, we bought a Belkin High Speed USB 2.0 4-Port Hub F5U234 Rev.3.  
This is what the techie at the Apple Store recommended, so we bought  
it. Total pile of junk, all sorts of hangs, etc. Everything started  
working again after we returned it and stuck in a $19 no-name brand  
hub. I've been told it's a known incompatibility, and that the Apple  
Store doesn't listen to Engineering. Go figure. Try a different hub.
