Weird network behaviour

When I click on Network in the Finder window, I usually get a list of  
machines and when I click on the one I want I am asked for username  
and password.

Recently, my machine has taken to listing the remote machine  
immediately in the left-hand column of the Finder window, and when I  
try to move a file to that machine I am not allowed to do so because  
the directories on the remote machine cannot be modified.

How can I get the old behaviour back, permanently?
