Yes, I know of verbose mode but that even grates at my aesthetic  
sensibilities (at least for everyday boots and reboots).

I was thinking of something (a little like) MacOS9's boot graphics  
(but not for extensions, just a row of icons to show TDM, or boot  
from CD, etc when the appropriate key is pressed).
