Hmmm...
Goto System Preferences > International > Input Menu
Check "Show Input Menu in menu bar"
Make sure "Keyboard viewer" is set "On".

Youll get a menu in the menu bar (surprise :-) )
Chenge the layout, have the keyboard viewer open, and see which  
characters are available (press opt and/or shift to see other  
characters in the keyboard viewer, which is a floating window).
