Aluminum iMac 20" display quality

I jumped too soon on the 20" aluminum iMac and didn't do enough
reading in advance. The LCD has moved from the high-quality IPS in
the previous 20" white iMac to a lower-quality TN display.

I immediately noticed that colors were washed out, bleached. The
default color profile is terrible. Recalibrating helped quite a bit,
but I can't seem to get it quite right. Then slowly realized there
was more to it than the profile. Fonts in general are not as smooth,
and smaller fonts are downright fried looking. Then I noticed a
brightness fade from top to bottom. The blue stripes in an iTunes
window are dramatically bluer at the top of the window than at the
bottom. Or Cmd-click messages in Mail.app from top to bottom and
watch the blueness fade from top to bottom.

At first thought I had gotten a bum display, but started reading and
finding messages like this:

Sounds like the 24" iMacs still use the IPS screen, so I'm tempted to
return it and upgrade, even though I don't really want or need the
extra size. I'm bummed about this. I love the 20" iMac form factor
and feel like I've either got to live with the display downgrade or
switch to a tower w/better screen or MBP. Guess this was the main
reason for the iMac price drop. Dang, Apple.

I'm no fan of this new keyboard, neither, but that's another story.
Might get used to it.
