There is obviously no _technical_ reason why it couldn't be
implemented, but as soon as you have to factor in things that compete
for priority in the development of a new application, even things
that are technically possible and nice to have, might have to get
scrapped or postponed.

To get that feature in this version of iMovie, they would have had to
drop something else. What would you suggest that they should have
dropped, that would have been less important to the majority of their
users?

That is not a good way to define consumer features vs. pro features
in my opinion. I would argue that while iChat _requires_ live
capture, iMovie can certainly succeed without supporting it at all.
What is a consumer / entry level feature in one app, doesn't have to
be that in a completely different app.

I wouldn't expect that most consumers use iMovie for live capture,
they use it like they use iPhoto, to import material that they
recorded using their digital video camera, and they use it to edit
that material and later export it to other formats. That's what I
expect it's used for by 99% of the users and 99% of the time.

The fact that Apple also already have other pro apps that can do what
you're asking for - available at a very reasonable price also from a
consumer perspective - certainly doesn't make it more likely that it
will show up in new apps.

This is obviously a tradeoff where you win some and loose some. That
it isn't perfect is what makes this a workaround, and not a final
solution.

Another thing that you might consider is to install a new copy of Mac
OS X + QT 7.1 on a separate partition / HD that you reboot to and use
when you need to capture. A fairly OK workaround IMO, at least if a
fix will eventually appear in an upgrade to QT.
