I've been following this thread since the beginning, and while I do  
not have a fix for you, it appears that 10.4.10 broke a lot of  
combination video/audio devices. My external iSight is no longer  
working properly, and numerous people with cameras with built-in  
mikes (both USB and Firewire, from several manufacturers) have  
reported similar issues.

10.4.10 had a serious audio problem initially (since fixed), but  
perhaps all of these other problems are symptomatic of wider audio  
issues in this release. It's possible your problem will be fixed in  
10.4.11, which seems to have been seeded to developers already and  
lists fixes to Core Audio. (Apparently. I just read the news and  
don't have firsthand knowledge.)

There were a handful of updates released all at once recently, so  
it's not easy to figure out what's going on. I could be off base.
