Yeah, this whole thing is a red herring. Wine lovers, with time,  
develop finer tastes. The pattern is true of pretty much any  
interest.  Millions of Windows users don't  think much about  
computers, and are content to use anything that works, while Mac  
users tend to be  computer aficionados. With time and experience  
they've come to appreciate computing nuances that are lost on many  
people.

Music  love  can lead to  audiophilia in exactly the  same  way that  
hard-core skiiers end up buying expensive skis that would be  
pointless for the average weekend  skiier, or  craftsmen end up  
buying  high-end tools, or  coffee lovers  end up buying the pricey  
stuff, or...

I don't  think  "audiophile" is a bad word just  because *some*  
audiophiles have lost the  forest  for  the trees. All the  
audiophiles I  know  are lifelong music lovers who haven't lost sight  
of  that  at all.
