Sales of the Mini have been poor so while I think its demise is not
yet upon us, it's usefulness is a question.
The movement of other lines to Core 2 have been justified in terms of
processing speeds, power savings and 802.11n (which is a chipset
thing). Mini is not designed to address these markets.
Apple's strategy is clear here. Transition everyone who would have
bought a mini as a media centre to an Apple TV. Get them to encode
their assets in iTunes compatible formats and no-one then needs to
hack the AppleTV.
That said if they replaced the current mini with a bookcase edition
Mac mini which had one PCI-express slot for your choice (quad
ethernet? kick-ass graphics card?) as well as the usual GigE, USB,
FW, DVI with integrated graphics
so...
