Sound settings on the Mac

Weird.  I do the exact same thing on my MacBook Pro (I love writing  
that ;-) and when I pull the USB it always switches to line out.   
Automatically.  Never touched a sound setting.  That is, presuming I  
have a line connected to Line Out.
